Fukuzoin

Fukuzoin Entrance

One thing mesmerising about Tokyo is how something unexpected might suddenly appear in the middle of an ordinary everyday scene. Fukuzoin is one of those - a large buddhist temple that manages to hide discreetly in a quiet residential neighbourhood.

If you head in through the main entrance, you’ll be greeted by two Ojizo-sama dressed in their customary red bibs.

Everything about Fukuzoin looks traditional and well-aged, yet look closer and you’ll notice solar panels cladding its roof instead of the usual tiles. The well-kept grounds make for a pleasant solitary walk on a balmy afternoon.
